Blandford Rugby Club actively promotes a fun and engaging
approach to the very competitive tag rugby competitions held throughout the
rugby season.
With skill coaching sessions held at the rugby pitches at
Blandford, the experienced and qualified coaches aim to give year 2 and 3
school ages a non contact taste of rugby.
TAG rugby is a fast moving, non contact invasion game that
is suitable for both boys and girls to play together. Its safe non
contact nature, combined with fun and vibrance of the sport, has meant that
mini tag is now the RFUs official version of rugby for under 7s and
under 8s.
The interchangeable nature of possession, leading to rapid
switching from attack to defence, means that a range of skills is cultivated
and developed.
Co-operation, integration and determination, along with
individual and collective responsibility, are all key elements of the game of
TAG RUGBY.
Each player has a tag belt around their waist with a tag on
either side, this is held on with velcro and when pulled off by an opposing
team member simulates a tackle and the ball has to then be passed. The game
usually is played 7 mins each way, with seven players on each side,
substitutions are allowed during the match and this allows everyone to gain
match experience.
A coach is allowed to run behind the team in a match to
offer advice and encourage the players.
A normal training session would last about 2 hours and
consist of a fun warm up time, followed by skill development, practise in small
groups, application of the skill, and then a game situation so the children can
apply the skills that have been taught.
All the coaches have been CRB checked, many have a Level 1
Certificate in Coaching Rugby Union, assistant coaches are encouraged to come
forward and offer their assistance, and it is often the parents that do this
that soon become Certified RFU coaches.
As a young child learning the basic skills of Rugby Union
the rewards are many and fun, it is these basic skills that are the foundation
blocks of the next generation of players and possibly the next England XV.
