The under 11 age group presents new challenges and new
skills to learn for members of the team.
From a coaching point of view the emphasis is still on fun
and hopefully as coaches we will be able to develop sessions that are enjoyable
for the players, but practice the essential skills without them knowing it!
At the start of the this season we welcomed a majority of
“old hands” as well as a number of new players. The squad as a whole
have got on well together and have made good progress with their skills and
general awareness of the game in the previous season, we now need to enhance
this aspect over the first weeks of the season.
The only limitation on the squad was the over abundance of
small, speedy players and not much in the way of bulk to compete in the
contested scrums.
In place of the bulk, that was our shortcoming last season,
the squad developed an aggressive (but fair) edge that has allowed them to win
a lot of ball on turnovers and compete on a more equal footing at set piece
scrums.
Now the squad is a year older hopefully they will have put
on some weight and this will enable us to take on other teams on a more equal
footing.
