PROP IDOL – ‘THE SEARCH FOR THE NEXT BIG THING’

I am delighted to announce details of our county wide Prop Idol project. The project is a player and coach education initiative aimed at raising the profile and standards of playing and coaching in this specialized area. The project is aimed specifically at players in the Under 13/Under 14 age groups (boys) and Under 15 Girls. However coaches from all age groups are encouraged to attend.

We will be running 5 Prop Idol road shows across the county where players and coaches will benefit from the expert knowledge of our Front Row Mentors led by ex England under 21 and Bath Prop Alan Low. The schedule of these events is set out below:
  • Friday November 7th - Dorchester RFC
  • Wednesday November 12th - Bournemouth RFC
  • Friday November 14th - Westbury RFC · Wednesday November 19th - Swindon RFC
  • FINAL - Salisbury RFC - December 5th
  • All - 18:00-18:30 registration, 21:00 awards ceremony
The road show will consist of a Front Row Clinic, Parents workshop and a heat of the Prop Idol competition. The Front Row clinic will be delivered by our Front Row Mentors, following RFU guidelines and utilizing the revamped Front Row in Union coaching resource. The parental workshop is designed to show how we coach, referee and play in the scrum in a safe and controlled manner. Please encourage as many parents to attend as possible. Please note that players do not have to be existing ‘Front Rowers’ just be keen to have a go.

To aid easy administration of the scheme please return the attached document to my address either by email or post no later than 10 days prior to the event you wish to attend. All players must be pre-registered by post or email before the event, late entrants may not be accepted. For further information please do not hesitate to contact me Simon Culley (RDO Wiltshire) by phone 07764 960394 or by e-mail SimonCulley@rfu.com

RFU take action over ELVs in interests of youth game by RFU Press Office

June 2, 2008

The RFU Management Board has carefully considered a recommendation of the RFU Experimental Law Variations (ELVs) Implementation Task Group regarding introduction of some of the ELVs into the youth game in England.

The Management Board has approved the recommendation of the ELV Task Group that ELV 2 (shoulders must not be lower than the hips at the maul) and ELV 3 (pulling down the maul) should not be trialled in England at Under 19 level and below until:

• It has been demonstrated to be safe in the adult game;

• The results of trials currently taking place in South Africa have been properly analysed by the iRB with specific reference to the safety of pulling down the maul at all rugby played at U19 and below;

• Agreement has been reached on the safest method to pull down the maul and appropriate coaching techniques have been developed.

• Sufficient time is allowed for the safest method and the appropriate coaching techniques to be communicated to all those involved in rugby at U19 level and below.

The RFU will now discuss the issues that may arise with age grade cross-border competitions where other Unions are trialling ELV 2 & 3 with the IRB and affected Unions. However, the interests of young players and the safety concerns expressed by the game will take precedence.

RFU Chief Executive Francis Baron OBE said: "We have received a large number of letters from the youth game expressing serious concerns over the introduction of some of the ELVs in the youth game."

"It is established practice that Unions can apply variations to the Laws at youth level and many Unions exercise their rights in this respect. The RFU intends to exercise its rights in respect of the ELVs of concern to us and the game in England following discussion with the IRB and other affected Unions."

To All Blandford RFC club coaches

You may be aware that the IRB have been running trials with new Experimental Law Variations (ELV`S) in the southern hemisphere.

They have now published a document regarding these ELV`s, & the principles behind them. This can be downloaded by following this link:

http://www.community-rugby.com/communityrugby/index.cfm/Fuseaction/Home.Download_Counter/StoryId/20037/downloadid/3204/filename/IRB%20Guide%20to%20Experimental%20Law%20Variations.pdf

There has been a lot of debate regarding some of these ELV`s, especially the collapse of the maul. The RFU have yet to make a final decision regarding the implementation of the ELV`s, but in preparation we should consider how the changes would affect your players in your age group.

Please read the document, I will try and help if you have any questions regarding the proposed changes.

If they go ahead, as seems likely, I will try and enlist the help of a local ref to come to a senior session to go over the changes, of course everyone will be welcome to attend.

Due to unforseen circumstances, the Building a Safe Scrum & Lineout course on Wednesday 14th May has had to be postponed.

It is hoped to reschedule the course for mid July. Any update will be posted on this page when available.
